Aadhaar Photo Size and Rules: What UIDAI Flows Actually Accept (Free Checks)

4 min read · Updated 2026-10-24 · PdfPixel

Aadhaar is unusual among Indian ID systems: for enrolment and biometric update, the photo is taken live at the centre on UIDAI equipment, so there is nothing for you to prepare. The confusion starts with online flows, myAadhaar document updates, Aadhaar-PAN linking screens and third-party forms that ask you to upload a face photo or a scan of your Aadhaar letter.

This guide separates what UIDAI captures from what you must upload, lists the working bands recent flows have used, and shows how to prepare a clean, compliant file without handing your Aadhaar scan to a random website.

What UIDAI captures versus what you upload

Enrolment and biometric updates capture your photo, fingerprints and iris live at the centre. No user-supplied photo enters that process, so no size preparation is needed there.

Online flows are different: document update requests, some bank and telecom KYC re-verifications that reference Aadhaar, and printable Aadhaar letter scans all involve files you produce yourself.

Working bands for face photos in update flows

Face photos requested alongside Aadhaar updates commonly follow the standard Indian ID band: JPEG around 3.5 x 4.5 cm framing, held between 10 and 200 KB depending on the portal, with a plain light background and a neutral expression.

Where a flow states its own numbers, those win. Prepare a mid-band file near 50 KB and you sit inside almost every window without re-encoding.

Preparing the photo without risking the document

  1. Capture square-on to a window with even light on your face, against a plain wall.
  2. Crop head-and-shoulders and place it on a clean white background with the background tool, which runs in your browser.
  3. Compress into the stated KB window with a measured compressor, not a guessing slider.
  4. For Aadhaar letter scans, mask or share only the fields the flow actually needs | the full letter with your number is identity material.

Rejections and how to pre-empt them

The usual Aadhaar-adjacent rejections are not about the number on the file: shadow gradients behind the head, spectacles glare, blurred rescans of prints, and stretched crops that change the face ratio all fail reviewer checks even when the KB value is perfect.

Flat light, a true white background, and a crop that keeps the original aspect ratio remove nearly all of them before compression.

If a flow rejects a file that meets every stated rule, re-run the preset rather than editing the exported file by hand | re-encoders on the portal side expect a clean JPEG stream.

Frequently asked questions

Does UIDAI accept user-uploaded photos for enrolment?
No. Enrolment and biometric updates capture the photo live at the centre. Uploads appear only in online update, KYC re-verification and third-party flows that reference Aadhaar.
What KB range should I prepare?
A mid-band JPEG near 50 KB with 3.5 x 4.5 cm framing sits inside most stated windows. Always re-check the live notice on the flow you are filling.
Is it safe to upload my Aadhaar scan to online tools?
Only to tools that process in your browser and keep no copy. Upload-based converters store what you send | client-side tools do not.
Can I reuse my passport photo file for Aadhaar flows?
Usually yes for face-photo fields, because both follow the plain-background, neutral-expression standard. Check framing: passport specs are square, Aadhaar-adjacent flows usually expect the 3.5 x 4.5 cm rectangle.
What if my scan is a photo of a print?
Rescan or re-capture if possible. Photos of prints carry moire and glare that reviewers reject | a flatbed scan or a square-on phone capture in even light is far cleaner.
