OCR a Scanned PDF Online Free: Make Scans Searchable (No Upload)

4 min read · Updated 2026-10-21 · PdfPixel

A scanned PDF is a photograph wearing a PDF costume. You cannot select a word, search a clause or copy a paragraph, because underneath the glass there are only pixels. OCR, optical character recognition, reads those pixels and writes a real text layer behind them.

Most OCR services upload your scans to their servers and bill by the page. This one runs the recognition engine inside your browser tab, so a scanned contract or medical report never touches anyone else's machine.

What OCR actually produces

The tool analyses each page image, recognises characters and words, and embeds an invisible text layer aligned with the visible scan. The result looks exactly like the original, but now you can select, search, copy, and feed it to PDF to Text or PDF to Word.

Recognition quality follows scan quality. A 300 DPI flatbed scan of clean print comes back near perfect; a phone photo of a page at an angle with shadows will carry errors.

Step by step

  1. Open OCR PDF and add the scanned file; the recognition engine loads locally the first time, then everything runs on-device.
  2. Start the OCR pass and watch per-page progress; large scans take longer because your own CPU does the reading.
  3. Download the searchable PDF and test it: select a sentence, run a search for a word you know is on page five.
  4. Need the words as text afterwards? Pipe the result through PDF to Text for a clean copyable output.

Getting better accuracy

Keep the page flat and evenly lit; shadows read as strokes.

Clean print beats handwriting every time: OCR is trained on typefaces, not scribbles.

Check critical numbers manually; a misread 8 as 3 matters in invoices and IDs.

Why in-browser OCR matters here

Scans are the most sensitive documents people own: hospital reports, signed agreements, identity papers. Cloud OCR services store, process and sometimes train on what you send them. With recognition running locally, the privacy question disappears; there is no upload to protect.

The tradeoff is speed: your phone or laptop does the work that a server farm would do faster. For typical documents of a few dozen pages, the wait is measured in minutes, once per file.

Frequently asked questions

Is the OCR result a new PDF or a text file?
A new PDF with an invisible text layer behind the original scan. It looks unchanged but becomes searchable and selectable. Use PDF to Text afterwards if you want the raw words.
Does my scanned document get uploaded?
No. The recognition engine runs entirely in your browser. After the first load of the engine itself, even that step is cached locally.
Which languages are recognised?
English recognition is built in and runs offline. Accuracy is highest on clean printed text at 300 DPI or more.
Can OCR fix a blurry or angled phone photo?
Partially. It will recognise most print, but expect errors in small fonts. Re-shoot flat, in good light, and the same file recognises far better.
Is there a page limit?
No. Time scales with your own hardware, so very large scans simply take longer rather than hitting a paywall.
