Instagram Post and Story Size Guide 2026: Feed, Reels and Stories in Pixels
Instagram accepts almost anything and then decides for you how it will look, which is why posts get soft edges, white bars or surprise crops. This guide lists the working pixel sizes for every placement in 2026, feed squares, portrait posts, stories and reels, explains the compression behaviour, and shows how to prepare each format in your browser with no upload, at pdfpixel.tech.
Feed sizes: square and portrait win
The two feed formats that behave best are the square at 1080x1080 pixels (1:1) and the portrait at 1080x1350 pixels (4:5). Landscape photos are displayed smaller in the feed and are commonly cropped toward these ratios, so a wide picture loses impact and sometimes content.
The portrait 4:5 format occupies the most screen space without being clipped in the feed, which is why it is the default recommendation for anything you want seen. Prepare with Resize for Instagram to hit 1080x1080 or 1080x1350 exactly, or Resize Image for custom dimensions.
Stories and reels: the 9:16 canvas
Stories and reels share the same full-screen canvas: 1080x1920 pixels, a 9:16 portrait. Anything else gets letterboxed, cropped or scaled by the app, and text or logos too close to the top and bottom edges collide with the interface chrome (profile row, progress bar, reply field).
The practical safe zone is roughly the middle 1080x1420 region: keep faces and text there. Convert a horizontal photo to a full 9:16 canvas without cropping the subject using Resize for Instagram, which fits your picture to the 9:16 canvas.
Why quality drops, and the file-size habit
Instagram re-encodes uploads and applies additional compression on slow connections. Two habits survive this well: upload at exactly the display resolution (1080 wide, no more) rather than giant camera files, and avoid stacking edits. A 4000-pixel-wide photo is downscaled by their pipeline, not yours, and you lose control of how.
If your export must shrink to meet a size target, Image Compressor and Image Compressor do it in one clean pass at a chosen quality. For sharpening a soft frame before posting, Unblur and AI Photo Enhancer recover detail locally.
Grids, carousels and the 3x3 trick
A grid post (nine tiles forming one big square on your profile) starts as a single wide or tall image split into 3x3 pieces. Each tile is posted in order and Instagram shows them individually in the feed but together on your profile.
Instagram Grid slices one image into 3x3, 3x2 or 3x1 tiles and hands you a ZIP in the right posting order. Carousels need no special size, just keep every slide on the same ratio (all 4:5 or all 1:1) so swiping does not jump.
Prepare everything privately
Social pictures are personal pictures. Every operation in this guide, squaring, portrait-cropping, 9:16 padding, splitting, compressing, runs inside your browser tab on your device. No queue, no account, no server copy.
Workflow for a post: open Resize for Instagram, pick 1080x1350, position, export; for a story, fit to 1080x1920 with Resize for Instagram; then upload from your Downloads folder. The whole chain stays local at pdfpixel.tech.
