How to Merge PDF Files on Any Device
Merging two PDFs should take ten seconds. In practice it takes twenty minutes of installing trial software, discovering the free tier has a page limit, and watching the tool blur your scanned contract into grey mush.
This guide covers merging on every common device, explains what actually happens to your pages, and shows the mistakes that ruin page order and quality — so the finished document looks like it was made deliberately.
What merging actually does
A PDF is a container. It holds pages, and each page holds content streams, fonts and images. When you merge two files, a good tool copies whole pages from both documents into one new container — it does not screenshot them, re-render them or rebuild them.
That distinction matters. Copying pages preserves full resolution, selectable text and embedded fonts. Re-rendering produces a fatter, blurrier file. If a merge tool makes your text look fuzzy, it is doing the second thing.
The fastest method: merge in your browser
You do not need to install anything. PdfPixel's Merge PDF runs inside your browser, so it works the same way on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Nothing is uploaded, which matters most when the files are contracts, invoices or ID documents.
- Open the Merge PDF tool.
- Click the upload area or drag your files onto it.
- Drag the file cards into the order you want them in.
- Press Merge PDF and the combined file downloads immediately.
Merging on specific devices
iPhone and iPad
Open Safari and go to the tool, then tap the upload button and pick files from iCloud Drive, On My iPhone or a recent download. Downloaded output lands in the Files app under Downloads. There is no app to install and no iOS version requirement beyond a modern Safari.
Android
Chrome on Android works exactly like the desktop version. Tap the upload area, choose Files or Google Drive, and select your PDFs. The merged file saves to your Downloads folder, ready to attach in WhatsApp, Gmail or Drive.
Windows and macOS
Any modern browser works. The only advantage desktop gives you is dragging files straight from a file manager window onto the page, which is faster than browsing for them.
How to get the page order right
Almost every merge mistake is an ordering mistake, and it usually happens with dozens of files that all have similar names. Two habits prevent it completely:
- Rename files with a numeric prefix before merging — 01-cover.pdf, 02-terms.pdf, 03-appendix.pdf. Sorted alphabetically, they are already in the correct order.
- Check the drag-and-drop list, not the file names. The order shown in the list is the order in the output; the file names are irrelevant to the merge.
Common problems and what causes them
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Output is blurry | The tool re-rendered pages instead of copying them | Use a client-side tool that copies pages; quality should be identical to the source |
| Pages from different files look different sizes | The documents genuinely have different page sizes | Normal, and usually desirable — a merge does not force pages to a single size |
| File is unexpectedly large | Photos in the source PDFs dominate the size | Compress the merged file; scanned pages shrink the most |
| Bookmarks look duplicated | Both source files had bookmark entries | Harmless — viewers list both sets; nothing is broken |
When merging is the wrong tool
If you only need part of the second document, merge will carry everything across. Use Extract Pages to pull a few pages into a new file, or Split PDF to carve a large document into the pieces you actually need. Merging first and deleting afterwards works too, but it is an extra step on every file.
